What happens to the belongings in a hoarding clearance

A cleared flat with sealed cartons stacked against one wall and an empty steel shelving unit.

This is the question that decides whether a clearance is agreed to or resisted, and it is almost never asked directly. It is asked as “when can you come” by somebody who is actually asking “what will you throw away”.

Sorted, not shovelled

A house clearance empties a property and speed is the point. A hoarding clearance is different work, because in most cases the person still lives there and has to keep living there afterwards.

So it is sorted as it goes rather than bagged wholesale. Recyclables, general waste and hazardous material are separated during the work, because they cannot be disposed of through the same stream anyway.

What is protected by default

  • Documents. Identity papers, bank and property paperwork, letters. These are set aside, not assessed for importance by us.
  • Photographs. Loose, framed or in albums, including the ones that look damaged.
  • Jewellery and small valuables, which in a hoarded unit turn up inside other things far more often than people expect.
  • Anything identified as a keepsake by whoever has the say, whether or not it looks like one to anybody else.

That last one is the important one. A keepsake is defined by the person, not by the object, and we do not argue with the definition.

The decisions are made before we start

What leaves and what stays is agreed at the start with whoever has the say, and where the person living there is present and able, that includes them. Nothing is decided mid-job by whoever is holding the bag.

If you want to see every bag before it leaves, say so. It slows the work down and it is a completely reasonable condition.

Where the waste goes

Everything removed is disposed of legally, through the proper channel, and anything biological is handled as a hazard rather than as ordinary rubbish. If you want to know the route, ask and we will tell you plainly. It is a fair question and the answer sorts this trade quickly.

The part people forget

Clearing a room is not the same as making it habitable. The unit is cleaned afterwards, which is a separate step and the one most often left out of a cheap quote.

The service is hoarder disposal and clearance, and there is more on the shape of the work in clearing a hoarded home in Singapore.

Money, and where it turns up

In a long-occupied home, cash, bank books, certificates and jewellery are found inside other things far more often than anybody expects. Inside books, in coat pockets, taped under drawers, in envelopes in among paper that looks like junk.

This is a large part of why sorting as we go matters, and why a clearance run as an emptying job costs people more than the clearance did.

Anything of that kind is set aside and handed over. It is not our place to value it, assess it or advise on it, and we do not.

Donations and disposal

People often want usable items to go somewhere rather than to waste, and that is a decent instinct. Be aware that items from a hoarded unit are frequently not in a condition anybody can accept, particularly soft goods, and anything that has been exposed to organic or biological material cannot go on to somebody else at all.

We will tell you honestly which is which rather than agreeing on the day and disposing of it quietly afterwards. Where it all ends up is set out in where the waste actually goes.

If you are standing in it right now, call us.

You do not need to know what to ask for. Tell us what has happened and we will take it from there, at any hour, on any day.
